From the centre of Tortona, the barracks of the carabinieri, take for Sarezzo. The cement that has covered everything leaves space to the countryside. Along the valley floor, just before the remains of the furnace that was for decades a symbol of this corner of Piedmont, in the town of Viguzzolo, take a right, short steep climb. Will be a few meters, but will they will give you, especially in a beautiful day, a small paradise in the country but so close to the city: at your feet, in front of you (even if the height is not that high), the beautiful val Grue and hills Tortonesi.
Our destination this week is a bright country house, clean tidy and shiny, elegant and sober in its peaceful rose colour. The owners during the week run in Palazzo (district of Sarezzo) the old Bar Trattoria Salumeria Commestibili Pane e Tabacchi dei Viaggiatori (which I have not tried), then, upon request, waiting couples, family, groups of friends who know that they will find here a friendly, familiar, simple ambience where to eat the good things of tradition accompanied by the wines of the territory. Hence Russian salad, cold cuts, veal with tuna sauce, the “rabaton" made with ricotta and herbs or spinach with brown butter, braised agnolotti with sauce, roast duck and beef à l’orange. Home-made desserts also include fresh fruit salad and pear tart and chocolate.
